Orthodox Cross symbol is a Christian cross with an additional slanted crossbeam that is used by the Orthodox Church. The sign has been known since the 6th century, and initially was used by Byzantine Empire. It started to be officially used by the Russian Church in 1551. In the 6-pointed cross, the lower end of the slanted crossbar symbolizes the terrible burden of unrepentant sin, and the second one, directed upwards, represents the liberation by repentance, through which the path to the Kingdom of Heaven lies. Nowadays, the Orthodox Cross necklace is often worn by Christian people in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and other countries from Eastern Europe.
