Mitsudomoe symbol (Triple Tomoe) is a black and white sign with a spinning spiral inside, which makes it similar to the Celtic triskelion. It’s often used in Japanese family banners and crests, and is one of the main symbols in Shintoism and Buddhism. It can often be found on shrines, dedicated to Hachiman, the Shinto deity of war. This is why samurai also often used it as an emblem. Mitsudomoe necklace represents a whirlpool and the water element in general, and thereby gives protection from fire. Nowadays, Mitsudomoe remains a widely used design element in Japanese heraldry, as well as in the logos of many karate and judo schools.
