It got its name from the River Meander in Asia Minor, Ephesus. The Greeks saw a deep magical meaning in it which reflected the course of human life. The direct path symbolized virtue. It was often used in Etruscan and ancient Greek, and then in ancient Roman, Byzantine, Romanesque architecture.
