Maeda Clan Kamon symbol (Umebachi) is a family crest of the Maeda lineage, a prominent and powerful samurai clan in feudal Japan, inferior only to the famous Tokugawa clan. The clan had ruled in Kaga Province with the capital in Kanazawa, until it split into several smaller branches in the 17th century. The Kamon Maeda necklace represents a stylized black-and-white (or sometimes black-and-gold) plum flower. This is an iconic image for Japanese culture that represents the vitality and endurance of life, since plum trees are one of the first to blossom after the winter.
